The TJ Smith Stakes is a Group 1 weight-for-age race held each year in April at Randwick racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres and worth $500,000 in prizemoney. The 2010 TJ Smith Stakes was won by Melito from Hot Danish with Mic Mac third.
The TJ Smith Stakes is held on the same day as the Group 1 AJC Australian Derby and AJC Sires Produce Stakes.

The TJ Smith Stakes is a good quality weight-for-age race over the sprint distance of 1200m and tends to attract the best sprinters going around at this time of year. It has grown to become a race for good horses and is named after the legendary trainer Tommy Smith.
The level weight conditions favour the best horses in the race and more often than not, with any luck in running, the best horses will figure in the finish due to the weight advantage. The Gr2 Canterbury Stakes and Gr1 George Ryder Stakes are typical lead up races.
In recent times Bentley Biscuit (2007) and Shamekha (2005) went on to win the Gr1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) on the final day of the Randwick carnival after scoring in this event.
Melito (2010) went on to run second in the Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap during the Brisbane winter carnival before winning the Gr1 Winter Stakes for fillies & mares on the final day of the carnival at Eagle Farm.
Melito (2010) ran third in the Gr3 Birthday Card Stakes when resuming before winning this race second-up when she motored home late and recent winners of the TJ Smith Stakes have been Takeover Target (2009) and Apache Cat (2008).

2010 TJ Smith Stakes: Melito was always well back and came with a very strong run late to grab the lead close to home and go on for a top win. Hot Danish raced on the pace and looked the winner after racing to the lead in the straight, before being overtaken close to home. Mic Mac raced back in fourth spot all the way and made a move inside the 250m and was narrowly beaten into third spot.
