George Ryder Stakes

The George Ryder Stakes is a Group 1 weight-for-age race held annually each April at Rosehill racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over a distance of 1500 metres and worth $400,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 George Ryder Stakes was won by Rangirangdoo from Love Conquers All with Triple Elegance third.

The winner of this race is exempt from a ballot on the Doncaster Handicap.

The George Ryder Stakes takes place on Sydney's biggest day of racing which is Golden Slipper Day and includes four other Group 1 races on the program including the Golden Slipper Stakes, The BMW, Vinery Stud Stakes, and the Queen Of The Turf Stakes.

The George Ryder Stakes is a time honoured weight-for-age race that always assembles the the best sprinter/milers available and the race has a long history of being won by top class gallopers. Many of Australia's finest thoroughbreds have saluted in this race, including Weekend Hussler (2008), Racing To Win (2006), Lonhro (2003-4) and the brilliant Schillaci in 1993.

The Ryder has traditionally been a good horse's race and the level weights playing field ensures that the best horses will more often than not figure in the finish. The race itself has proven a solid guide to the Gr1 Doncaster Handicap in recent times, with Vision And Power (2009), Haradasun (2007), Racing To Win (2006) and Grand Armee (2nd in 2003) all going on to score victories in Randwick's premier mile race of the autumn.

Love Conquers All (2nd in 2011) went on to run second in the Doncaster Handicap at his next start and horses who compete in this event might also consider going on to tackle races like the Gr1 AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes or Gr1 All Aged Stakes on the final day of the autumn carnival at Randwick.

Rangirangdoo (2011) ran fourth in the Gr2 Canterbury Stakes over 1300m at Rosehill on his way to winning this race and recent George Ryder Stakes winners have been Danleigh (2010) and Vision And Power (2009).
