The race is run over a distance of 1300 metres and worth $175,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Canterbury Stakes was won by More Joyous from Love Conquers All with Demerit third.
The winner of this race is exempt from ballot for the George Ryder Stakes.

The Canterbury Stakes is a good quality weight-for-age race that takes place on the same day as the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Classic & Gr1 Ranvet Stakes and the race generally attracts above average gallopers, with the level weights conditions of the race favouring the better horses engaged.
More often than not the winner will simply be an above average galloper, although every now and then a topliner may find their name etched upon the honour roll such as brilliant Gai Waterhouse mare More Joyous (2011) who scored the easiest of victories.
Typically a good lead up race to the Gr1 George Ryder Stakes at the same track on Golden Slipper day, you have to go back to Quick Flick (1998) to find the last galloper take out the Canterbury Stakes & George Ryder Stakes double.
More Joyous (2011) won the Gr1 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield prior to scoring an easy victory in this event and recent Canterbury Stakes winners have been Hot Danish (2010) and All Silent (2009).
