The Canterbury Stakes is a Group 2 weight-for-age race held annually each March at Rosehill racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over a distance of 1300 metres and worth $150,000 in prizemoney. The 2010 Canterbury Stakes was won by Hot Danish from Black Piranha with Mr Baritone third.
The winner of this race is exempt from ballot for the George Ryder Stakes.

The Canterbury Stakes is a good quality weight-for-age race that takes place on the same day as the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Classic & Gr1 Ranvet Stakes and the race generally attracts above average gallopers, with the level weights conditions of the race favouring the better horses engaged.
More often than not the winner will simply be an above average galloper, although every now and then a topliner may find his name etched upon the honour roll.
It is typically a good lead up race to the Gr1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) in a fortnight at the same track, although the last horse to win both races in the same year was Quick Flick back in 1998. Last year, Black Piranha (4th in 2009) went on to run second in the George Ryder Stakes, while All Slient (2009) ran fourth as the race favourite.
Hot Danish (2010) went on to win the Gr1 All Aged Stakes at Randwick later in the carnival before heading north to Brisbane to take out Gr1 Doomben 10,000 during the Brisbane winter carnival and recent Canterbury Stakes winners have been All Silent (2009) and Mentality (2008).

2010 Canterbury Stakes: Hot Danish raced behind the pace in fourth spot on the fence and around the 300m mark she sprinted to a clear lead and kept going strongly to the line for a very good win. Black Piranha was always towards the rear and ran home very nicely for second place, while Mr Baritone also came from back in the field to claim third spot.
