Horse Racing Shares - What's it cost to own a Racehorse?

Firstly, you will have to buy a share in a racehorse and horse racing shares vary in cost depending upon the breeding of a horse. An extremely well bred horse might cost upwards of $6000-$10,000 a share while bargain buys may be around $2,000-$6000 a share.

Once a racehorse is purchased, and depending on who is training it, the average cost will be around $40,000 to $60,000 per year to maintain & race that horse, barring any unforeseen circumstances. A 10% share in that horse would cost around $4000-$6000 per year on average.

A 10% share for example would cost around $75-$115 per week on average, while a 5% share would be between $38-$58 per week.

  • 5% Share - app $38-$58 per week ($2000-$3000 per year)
  • 10% Share - app $76-$116 per week ($4000-$6000 per year)
  • 15% Share - app $114-$174 per week ($6000-$9000 per year)
  • 20% Share - app $152-$232 per week ($8000-$12,000 per year)

E.G. If you and four friends wanted to purchase a 10% share in a racehorse at a $4000 per share asking price, each of you would be up for an initial $800 each for the share and then around approximately $15-$25 per week each (app $80-$100 per month) to maintain & race the horse.

ATB are very flexible and can cater to whatever meets your budget. We've had many horses with Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock over the years and learning how to start horse racing syndicates is an essential read. The above figures are a useful guide as far as costs are concerned.

About Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock

Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock P/L (ASIC FSL:255488) was established in 1997 by Darren and Elizabeth Dance after they had spent many years successfully racing horses in Victoria and South Australia, including the dual Group one winning Mookta (Oakleigh Plate, Newmarket Hcp etc).

Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock is situated around 50 kilometres from Geelong and Ballarat in central Victoria on an 85 acre stud at 'Manningtree Park'. It is here that horses like the group winners Skewiff and True Courser were born, raised and later syndicated before going on to win at the highest level.

ATB are fully dedicated to the management and running of Manningtree Park and Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock, working 7 days per week. They personally feed all of the horses residing at Manningtree Park, including pregnant mares, new born foals, weanlings, yearlings or any spelling racehorses. Manningtree Park only houses horses that are owned outright or raced in partnership or syndication.
