The Newmarket Handicap is a Group 1 Open Handicap race held annually each March at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne during the autumn racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres and has prizemoney of $1,000,000. The 2010 Newmarket Handicap was won by Wanted from Eagle Falls with Starspangledbanner third.
The Newmarket Handicap takes place on Super Saturday of racing at Flemington racecourse where all races are stakes races, with seven group races, including two other high quality Gr1 races, the Australian Guineas and Australian Cup.

The Newmarket Handicap is the premier handicap sprint event held at Flemington during the autumn racing carnival and it takes place down the straight 1200m course. The race always attracts high quality gallopers and has been taken out by many of our finest sprinters over the years.
The Flemington 'Straight Six' 1200m course is a straight track with no turns involved and suits some horses more than others. Competitiors with proven records at the course & distance are horses to look for when doing the form for this race. The Gr1 Lightning Stakes (1000m), Gr1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) and Gr1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) are good lead up races to this event.
Swiss Ace (2nd in 2009) won the Oakleigh Plate before finishing a close runner-up to the outstanding sprinter Scenic Blast in the Newmarket.
Wanted (2010) ran second in the Lightning Stakes and William Reid Stakes before running fourth in the Oakleigh Plate prior to leading all the way in this event. Recent winners of the Newmarket Handicap include Scenic Blast (2009) and Weekend Hussler (2008).

2010 Newmarket Handicap: Wanted led and showed great heart to lead all the way and defied a determined late challenge from Eagle Falls (second), who raced on the pace but was unable to cath the winner, while Starspangledbanner also raced on the pace but his run ended inside the final 100m and he battled on well for third, just ahead of the fat finishing 3yo King Pulse.
