Chairmans Handicap

The Chairmans Handicap is a Group 2 open handicap race held each year in April at Randwick racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over a distance of 2600 metres and worth $175,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Chairmans Handicap was won by Once Were Wild from Anudjawun with C'est Le Guerre third.

The winner of the Chairman's Handicap race is exempt from a Sydney Cup ballot & penalty and the race is held on AJC Derby Day alongside premier Group 1 races the AJC Australian Derby, TJ Smith Stakes and AJC Sires Produce Stakes.

The Chairmans Handicap is a 2600m distance race run under handicap conditions and traditonally used as a lead up race to the Gr1 Sydney Cup over 3200m in a fortnight at the same track. In recent times Jessicabeel (2010), No Wine No Song (2008), Henderson Bay (2002), Linesman (1997) and King Aussie (1990) all won this race and then went on to win the Sydney Cup.

It is typically a more than handy race for staying types who are looking for an event somewhat closer in distance to the two mile journey of the upcoming Sydney Cup and the field quality tends to vary each year.

In recent times Divine Rebel (2009) finished second in the Sydney Cup at her next start after winning this event and she also finished second in the Cup the following year, while Ista Kareem (4th in 2009) managed to take out the Sydney Cup after running fourth in this race. Handy mare Jessicabeel (2010) went on to win the Sydney Cup and Harris Tweed (3rd in 2010) finished third in the same race.

Once Were Wild (2011) ran unplaced in the listed Mannion Cup over 2400m at Randwick prior to leading all the way to win this event and recent Chairman's Handicap winners include Jessicabeel (2010) and Divine Rebel (2009).
