The WH Stocks Stakes is a Group 2 weight-for-age race for mares and held each September at Moonee Valley racecourse in Melbourne. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and is worth $200,000 in prizemoney. The 2009 WH Stocks Stakes was won by classy mare Zarita from Cats Whisker with Soul Diva in third placing.

The WH Stocks Stakes is a nice little mares race and a good lead up to race such as the Blazer Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Turnbull Stakes day or the Gr3 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) on Caulfield Cup day. The Gr1 Myer Classic at Flemington on Derby day might also be on the agenda for the better quality mares in this race.
The race has been won by some more than handy mares including Tuesday Joy (2008), She's Archie (2004), Hula Wonder (2000) and Arctic Scent in 1996.
Zarita (2009) ran unplaced in the Gr2 Liston Stakes prior to winning this event and she then went on to run third in the Myer Classic later in the spring. In recent years the WH Stocks Stakes has been won by Tuesday Joy (2008), Devil Moon (2007) and Astrodame in 2006.

2009 WH Stocks Stakes: Zarita was held up rounding the turn while Cats Whisker kicked away in the straight and looked home until Zarita finally got clear and gathered momentum to finish strongly and get the result in a narrow photo finish, while Soul Diva was an honest third.
