The Memsie Stakes is a Group 2 race held annually under weight-for-age conditions at Caulfield racecourse, Melbourne in late August. The race is run over a distance of 1400 metres and worth $200,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Memsie Stakes was won by King's Rose from Heart Of Dreams with Red Colossus third.
The Memsie Stakes is run in late August each year and generally attracts a number of gallopers returning for the big spring races ahead and it can often make for a trickay affair with so many horses early in their campaign.
Competitors will head on to races like the upcoming Gr2 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington or the Gr2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley in a fortnight and the JJ Liston Stakes held earlier in the carnival at Caulfield is the ideal lead-up race to this event. Regal Roller (2004) was the last horse to complete the double while Shoot Out (3rd in 2010) won the Liston Stakes before running third in this race.
Some quality thoroughbreds have won their name etched on the Memsie Stakes honour roll and it has proven to be a great guide to the Gr1 WS Cox Plate in recent years. So You Think (2009-10), El Segundo (2006), Makybe Diva (2005), Sunline (2000-01) and Dane Ripper (1998) all managed to win the WS Cox Plate either before or after winning this race.
Always a pivotal race of the spring, the Memsie Stakes can often provide a springboard for a classy galloper to make a name for himself on the spring racing stage.
King's Rose (2011) finished unplaced in the New Zealand Oaks in the autumn before winning this event first-up fro a spell for the Moody stable and recent Memsie Stakes winners include So You Think (2010) and Mic Mac (2009).
Spring Carnival Guide
So You Think (2010) had a big spring after winning this race and went on to win the Gr1 Underwood Stakes and Gr1 Yalumba Stakes at Caulfield before going on to win his second succesive WS Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
Whobegotyou (2nd in 2009-10) went on to win succcessive Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley and in the spring of 2010 ran third in the Yalumba Stakes and WS Cox Plate.
Maldivian (2nd in 2007) went on to win the 2008 Cox Plate and Haradasun
(2nd in 2007) came third in the WS Cox Plate later in the same carnival. El Segundo (2006) went on to win the 2007 WS Cox Plate in great style, while Sunline successful in 2001-02 took out the Cox Plate double in 1999-2000 and was denied the hat-trick by Northerly in 2001.
Interestingly enough, the outstanding mare Makybe Diva captured three Melbourne Cups in 2003-05 before returning to win this race in 2006. Cast a keen eye over the Memsie Stakes and you may very well find an upcoming star of the spring in the midst.
