The Underwood Stakes is a Group 1 weight-for-age race held annually each September at Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne over a distance of 1800 metres. The race is worth $350,000 and is a signal for some great group one racing to come. The 2009 Underwood Stakes was won by Heart Of Dreams from Whobegotyou with Predatory Pricer third.
The Underwood Stakes is held on the same day as the Gr1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes(1400m) and these two races are now the first Group One races of the new racing season in Melbourne.
The Gr1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) has traditionally been the first Group One race of the new season, but the MVRC moved the Manikato from early September to late September in 2009 to coincide with the Gr2 Stutt Stakes, which is held on the following Friday night after the Underwood Saturday meeting.

The Underwood Stakes is run over an uncommon distance of 1800 metres and serves as a good race for those horses looking for longer than 1600 metres, and for horses who will be stepping up to longer distances around 2000m/2400m in coming weeks.
The race has been won by some top class horses over the years, including Weekend Hussler (2008), Elvstroem (2004), Northerly (2001-02), Octagonal (1996), Rubiton (1987) and Bonecrusher (1986) and has been a fair guide to the Caulfield Cup and WS Cox Plate in recent times.
The Underwood Stakes takes place two weeks before the Gr1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington and is the first weight-for-age race of the spring that is longer than the metric mile.
Heart Of Dreams ran fifth in the Gr2 Makybe Diva Stakes prior to winning this race and recent winners of the Underwood Stakes include Weekend Hussler (2008), Rubiscent (2007) and El Segundo in 2006.

Maldivian (4th in 2008) went on to win the Cox Plate later in the spring, while El Segundo (2006) also managed to win the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in 2007.
Elvstroem (2004) and Mummify (2003) both won this race before winning the Caulfield Cup in the same year.
Northerly (2001-02) took out the Underwood Stakes & WS Cox Plate in consecutive years and also won the 2002 Caulfield Cup.
Oliver Twist (2000) scored the Underwood Stakes & Mackinnon Stakes double in 2000.
