The Epsom Handicap is the premier handicap event of the Sydney spring racing carnival. The race is a Group 1 event over a distance of 1600 metres and held each year in early October at Randwick racecourse in Sydney. The Epsom Handicap is worth $350,000 in prizemoney and the race was won in 2009 by the Waterhouse trained Rock Kingdom from Rangirangdoo with Road To Rock third.
Epsom Handicap Day features three other quality Group 1 races alongside the Epsom, which are the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) for three-year-olds, The Metropolitan (2400m) for stayers, and the Flight Stakes (1600m) for 3yo fillies.

The Epsom Handicap is the major race of the Randwick spring carnival and is one of two tough Group 1 mile races on the Randwick racing calendar each year, with the other being the Doncaster Handicap in April. It is held on the same day as the major staying event of the spring in Sydney, The Metropolitan over 2400m.
The Epsom is a quality handicap event rich in history which always attracts many of Australia's best milers and has been won by some talented gallopers over the years. Top horses to win this race include Shogun Lodge (2000), Dodge (1998), Filante (1996) and the grand miler Super Impose who was a memorable dual winner of this race in 1990-91.
Recent winners of the Epsom Handicap have been Thesio (2008), the race was not held in 2007 due to the Equine Flu virus and prior to that Racing To Win was successful.
Rangiragdoo (2nd in 2009) went on to win the Gr2 Crystal Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley later in the spring on Cox Plate day in Melbourne.

2009 Epsom Handicap: Rock Kingdom raced on the pace and made his move entering the straight and was challenged strongly by Rangirangdoo, who had the run of the race, and they staged a great battle to the line with Rock Kingdom finding plenty in the run home to prove too strong. Rangirangdoo finished in second place with Road To Rock running on very strongly to get take third position.
