The Chipping Norton Stakes is a Group 1 weight-for-age race held each March at Warwick Farm racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and worth $350,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Chipping Norton Stakes was won by Danleigh from Centennial Park with Sacred Choice third.
The Chipping Norton Stakes is the premier event at Warwick Farm during the Sydney autumn and is the first Group 1 race of the new year in Sydney and the first group race over a mile. The event is raced under weight-for-age conditions and the AJC can also hold the race at Randwick if the Warwick Farm track is unusable for some reason.
Top class gallopers Lonhro (2003), Octagonal (1997), Juggler (1996) and Super Impose (1991-92) have all won this race, while Tie The Knot was good enough to greet the judge first on four consecutive occasions, from 1999 to 2002.
The Gr2 Apollo Stakes has been a good guide to this race in recent years with multiple gallopers having won or placed in both races, while Grand Armee (2005) and Tuesday Joy (2009) managed to take out the Apollo Stakes & Chipping Norton Stakes double.
All three placegetters in the 2010 Chipping Norton Stakes came via the Apollo Stakes, with Theseo running eighth in the Apollo before winning here, while Rangirangdoo was runner-up to stablemate Danleigh in the Apollo Stakes before finishing ahead of that horse in this race.
A race such as the Gr1 Ranvet Stakes may be next on the cards for gallopers competing in this event and Theseo (2010), Grand Armee (2005) and Tie The Knot (2000-01) all managed to take out the Chipping Norton Stakes & Ranvet Stakes double.
Danleigh (2011) ran sixth in the Apollo Stakes on his way to winning this race and recent Chipping Norton Stakes winners have been Theseo (2010) and Tuesday Joy (2009).
