The Apollo Stakes is a Group 2 Weight-for-age race held each February at Rosehill racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales during the autumn racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1400 metres and is worth $250,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Apollo Stakes was won by Melito from Hot Danish with Centennial Park third.
The Apollo Stakes is a weight-for-age race that tends to attract quality horses and has been won by some good types over the years. Top gallopers such as Lonhro (2003), Sunline (2000-01), Juggler (1996-7), Naturalism (1993), At Sea (1988) have all won the Apollo.
Being over 1400m it suits good, in form sprinters or classy types returning from a spell. Horses contesting this race may have come from the Gr2 Expressway Stakes a fortnight earlier and may then go on to races like the Gr1 Chipping Norton Stakes in a couple of weeks time at Warwick Farm.
Thesio (8th in 2009) went on to win the Chipping Norton Stakes at his next start, while Rangirangdoo (2nd in 2009) and Danleigh (2009) ran second and third respectively in the Chipping Norton Stakes after running the quinella in this event.
Melito (2011) won this race in fine style when resuming from a spell and recent Apollo Stakes winners have been Danleigh (2010) and Tuesday Joy (2009).
