Ranvet Stakes

The Ranvet Stakes is a Group 1 weight-for-age race held annually each March at Rosehill racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales during the autumn carnival. The race is run over a distance of 2000 metres and worth $400,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Ranvet Stakes was won by Zavite from Descarado with Hawk Island third.

The winner is of this race is exempt from ballot for the The BMW and the Ranvet Stakes is held on the same day as the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Classic for fillies & mares.

The Ranvet Stakes is the first weight-for-age event of the autumn over 2000m and tends to attract good quality middle distance types who may be going on to a race like the Gr1 The BMW (2400m) in a fortnight at the same track.

In recent years this race has proven a great guide to The BMW, with Tuesday Joy (2008) & Eremein (2006) both scoring The BMW & Ranvet Stakes double, while Thesio (2009) went on to finish runner-up in The BMW at his next outing. Fiumicino (7th in 2009) managed to win The BMW after finishing unplaced in this event.

The Gr1 Chipping Norton Stakes can often throw up winners or placegetters in this race and Thesio (2010), Grand Armee (2005) and Tie The Knot (2000-01) have all won the Chipping Norton Stakes & Ranvet Stakes double in recent times, while a number of horses have ran placings in both races.

Some classy gallopers have won the Ranvet Stakes over the years including the likes of Grand Armee (2005), Tie The Knot (2000-01), Veandercross (1993), Super Impose (1991) and the outstanding galloper Better Loosen Up (1990).

Zavite (2011) finished down the track in the Chipping Norton Stakes before leading all the way to win this event and recent Ranvet Stakes have been Thesio (2009-10) and Tuesday Joy (2008).
