The Sydney Cup is a Group 1 open handicap race held annually each April at Randwick racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over the staying distance of 3200 metres and is worth $400,000 in prizemoney. It was won in 2009 by Ista Kareem from Divine Rebel with Mr Tipsy third.

The Sydney Cup is the major handicap distance race of the Sydney autumn carnival for open horses and it is run over 3200m (2 miles) which is the same distance as Australia's most famous race, the Melbourne Cup. The race generally attracts the best available local stayers and any interstate raiders up to the challenge.
Quality gallopers such as Makybe Diva (2004), Tie The Knot (1998-99) and Count Chivas (1996) have won this race, and Makybe Diva went on to win the Melbourne Cup that same year on the way to three consecutive wins in the great race.
The Chairmans Handicap (2600m) held two weeks previously is generally a good guide to this race with No Wine No Song (2008), Henderson Bay (2002), Linesman (1997) and King Aussie (1990) all taking out the Chairmans Hcp/Sydney Cup double in recent times.
Ista Kareem (2009) ran fourth in the Chairman's Handicap prior to winning this race while Divine Rebel (2nd in 2009) won the Chairmans handicap on her way to second place in this race. No Wine No Song (2008), Gallic (2007) and County Tyrone (2006) have won the Sydney Cup in the past few years.
