Previously a listed race until promoted to Group 3 status in 2007, the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes is held on Group 1 CF Orr Stakes day, the second biggest race day of the Melbourne Racing Club's autumn carnival, after Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes day.

The Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes is a race for females only and the set weight & penalty conditions of the race advantages the better performed mares involved. Mares contesting this event may consider going on to similar mares races during the autumn, including the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes at Caulfield later in the month. Tycoon Tara (2015) is the last mare to win the Bellmaine Stakes & Mannerism Stakes double while Bonaria (3rd in 2014) won the Manneriism Stakes after finishing third in this race.
Generally not a race for superstars, the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes typically assembles a more than handy field of mares, where the winner is simply a more than handy type, rather than anything special. Griante (4th in 2015) travelled to Sydney the following month to win the Group 3 Wenona Girl Handicap at Randwick during the Sydney autumn racing carnival.
Sylvia's Mother (2020) resumed from a 5-month spell to score a slashing victory in this event for the training combination of Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes. The talented Snitzel mare captured the Group 3 Frances Tressady Stakes at Flemington at her next start.
