The Doomben Roses is a Group 3 set weights race for three-year-old fillies that takes place held each May at Doomben racecourse in Brisbane, Queensland. The race is run over a distance of 2020 metres and worth $175,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Doomben Roses was won by Scarlett Lady from Savannah's Choice with Divorces third.
Held on Gr1 Doomben Cup day, the Doomben Roses is one of seven group races on the second day of the Doomben carnival and is one of the premier race days of the Brisbane winter racing carnival at Doomben.
The Doomben Roses is a fillies only staying event for three-year-olds raced over a distance of 2020m and local gallopers will typically make up the majority of the Doomben Roses field, although now and then a more than handy eastern states galloper might consider tackling this event if up to the challenge.
The set weight conditions of the race favours the better females engaged and the classier fillies will generally come to the fore. The race itself provides the ideal lead up race to the Gr1 Queensland Oaks over 2400m at Eagle Farm in June.
Caulfield & Melbourne Cup winner Ethereal (2001) was the last filly to take out the Doomben Roses & Queensland Oaks double, while Purple (3rd in 2009) managed to win the Queensland Oaks at her next start, and Marheta (2010) finished runner-up in the Oaks after winning the Doomben Roses beforehand.
Better quality staying fillies might go on and tackle the Gr1 Queensland Derby on Stradbroke Day the following month at Eagle Farm and Dariana (3rd in 2010) finished third in the Doomben Roses before going on to score a big win in the Queensland Derby at her next start.
