The Auraria Stakes is a Group 3 race for three-year-old fillies that takes place each year in April at Morphettville racecourse in Adelaide, South Australia during the Adelaide autumn racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1800 metres under set weight & penalty conditions and worth $115,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Auraria Stakes was won by Shylight from Southern Speed with Absolutely third.
Held on the same day as the Gr3 RN Irwin Stakes at weight-for-age, the Auraria Stakes was run as the 'Schweppervescence Stakes' in 2011.
The Auraria Stakes is a three-year-old race for females only and suits fillies who may go on to races like the Gr1 Australasian Oaks over 2000m in April or the Gr2 Queen Of The South Stakes over 1600m in May. Absolutely (3rd in 2011) finished third in this race before finishing runner-up in the Australasian oaks, while Southern (2nd in 2011) ran third in the Australasian Oaks after finishing second in this race.
More often than not the Auraria Stakes will assemble a field of mainly local gallopers of average ability, with the winner going on to become a more than handy mare and not rising to any great heights.
Occasionally the race may produce some quality types who go on to bigger and better things, as it did in 2011, when runner-up Southern Speed (2nd in 2011) went on to win the Gr1 Caulfield Cup the following spring in Melbourne, while third placegetter Absolutely (3rd in 2011) headed to Sydney the following Saturday to win the Gr1 AJC Australian Oaks at Randwick.
Shylight (2011) ran second in a midweek race at Sandown over 1400m prior to winning this event and recent Auraria Stakes winners have been Fairy Oak (2010) and Princess Pulse (2009).
