The William Reid Stakes is a Group 1 Weight-for-age race held each year in February at Moonee Valley racecourse in Melbourne. It is run over the sprint distance of 1200 metres and is worth $500,000 in prizemoney. The 2010 William Reid Stakes was won by Turffontein from Wanted with Sniper's Bullet third.
The William Reid Stakes has been run as the 'Australia Stakes' since 1996, but reverted back to its original race name in 2010. The Gr2 Carlyon Stakes held in January at Moonee Valley will now be known as the Australia Stakes from 2010 onwards.

The William Reid Stakes is a good horse's race and attracts high quality weight-for-age sprinters every year who may then go on to races like the Gr1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield in seven days or the Gr1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on Super Saturday at Flemington in around 3 weeks.
Horses tackling this event may have previously contested the Gr1 Lightning Stakes on their way to this race. In recent times both Apache Cat (2008) and Miss Andretti (2007) won the Lightning Stakes before being going on to win the William Reid Stakes.
Over the years some champion sprinters have won this race, including Apache Cat (2008-09) & Miss Andretti (2007) most recently, while horses of the calibre of Hareeba (1995), Redelva (1991) and Zeditave (1989) have saluted in this event in the not so distant past.
Turffontein (2010) won this race first-up from a spell and recent winners of the William Reid Stakes have been Apache Cat (2008-09) and Miss Andretti (2007).

2010 William Reid Stakes: Turffontein was positioned third back on the fence and he bided is time until the entered the straight where he ranged up along side Wanted and ran to the lead for a strong but narrow win. Watned (second) sat right on the pace behind Light Fantastic and got to the lead in the straight before being run down close to home. Sniper's Bullet was always well back and got home strongly to finish third.
