Surround Stakes
The Surround Stakes is a Group 1 race for three-year-old fillies that usually takes place in late February or early March at Randwick racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over a distance of 1400 metres under set weight conditions and worth $200,000 in prize money. The 2020 Surround Stakes was won by Probabeel from Funstar with Xilong third.
Upgraded to Group 1 status for the 2017-2018 season.Held on Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes day, alongside the Group 3 Guy Walter Stakes and Group 3 Liverpool City Cup,
The race is named after former champion filly and 1976–1977 Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year, Surround.

The Surround Stakes is a good race for three-year-old fillies that is raced at level weights and suits the better performed females engaged. The Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes is the ideal lead up race to this event with classy gallopers More Joyous (2009) & Gold Edition (2007) the most recent gallopers to claim the Light Fingers Stakes & Surround Stakes double.
Good quality fillies tend to use the Surround Stakes as a stepping stone to the feature black type races to come at Rosehill and Randwick during the Sydney autumn racing carnival and Winx (5th in 2015) managed to capture the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes at Rosehill after running fitfh in this event.
In recent years the Surround Stakes has been a good guide to the Group 3 Keith F Nolan Classic at Kembla Grange with Pohutukawa (5th in 2019), Slightly Sweet (3rd in 2015), Zanbagh (5th in 2014) and Cameo (8th in 2013) all going on to win the Classic after contesting this race beforehand.
Probabeel (2020) took out the Listed Karaka Million over 1600m at Ellerslie in New Zealand before scoring a narrow victory in this event for Kiwi trainer Jamie Richards.
Recent Surround Stakes winners include Nakeeta Jane (2019) and Shoals (2018).
