The Thousand Guineas Prelude is run over 1400 metres for fillies only and is generally used as a lead up race to the Gr1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) in around a months time at the same track. The race takes place on Gr1 Underwood Stakes day at Caulfield.
The race is typically won by a more than handy filly who will most likely then go on to contest the Thousand Guineas on the 2nd day (Wednesday) of the three day Caulfield carnival, or alternatively, they will contests similar type filles races during the carnival.
Some handy fillies have won this event over the years and gone on to be very competitive as mares, with Miss Finland (2006) being the best of them in recent years, and she went on to compete and win at the highest level on many occasions.
Recent winners of the Thousand Guineas prelude have been Ortenisa (2008), Gabbidon (2007) and Miss Finland in 2006.

Miss Finland (2006) went on to win the 2007 Memsie Stakes before then running second in the Underwood Stakes and Yalumba Stakes.
Irish Lights (2009) went on to win the Thousand Guineas after winning this event and Headway (4th in 2009) won the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes on Derby day at Flemington.
