The Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes is more often than not won by a very good horse, although other times it can be taken out by just a handy horse, while some top liners also have their name on the honour role.
Classy types such as Exceed & Excel (2003), Testa Rossa (1999-2000), Encosta De Lago (1996), Our Maizcay (1995) and Poetic King (1994) have all won this race.
Winners and placegetters in this race are likely to go on and tackle open handicap or weight-for-age sprints from 1200m to 1600m and be more than competitive in all of them.
Turffontein (2009) went on to run second in both the Gr2 Caulfield Sprint and Gr1 Salinger Stakes later in the carnival. Recent winners of the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes have been Orange County (2008), Bon Hoffa (2007) and Rewaaya in 2006.

Spring Carnival Guide
The Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes is more of a guide to the major mile races of the spring with Orange County (2008) going on to run third in the Gr2 Crystal Mile on Cox Plate day at Moonee Valley.
Barely a Moment (2005) and Regal Roller (2004) both went on to win the Toorak Handicap in the same year, while Poetic King (1994) took out the Toorak Hcp in 1996, two years after winning this race. The classy Testa Rossa (1999-2000) won this race twice in a row and then took out the Gr1 Emirates Stakes after his second win in this event.
All American (6th in 2009) managed to win the Emirates Stakes later in the spring.

2009 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes: Turffontein sat behind the leader until the turn before getting to the lead in the straight and finding plenty to defy all challengers. Stickpin ran on strongly to get second placing from the fast finishing Raffaello who came from well back in the field to claim third.
