The Australia Stakes is a Group 2 Weight-for-age race held annually each year in late January at Moonee Valley racecourse in Melbourne. The race is a 1200 metres sprint event worth over $200,000 in prizemoney. Raced in the evening under lights, the 2010 Australia Stakes was won by Black Caviar from Here De Angels with La Rocket third

This race was formerly known as the 'Carlyon Stakes' up until 2010, when the MVRC made name changes to both the 'Carlyon Stakes' and 'William Reid Stakes'.

The 'Carlyon Stakes' had its name changed to the 'Australia Stakes' (recently run as the William Reid Stakes) in 2010 to fall in line with the Australia Day celebrations, while the William Reid Stakes (run in February) reverted back to the 'William Reid Stakes' from the 'Australia Stakes'.

The Australia Stakes generally attracts quality sprinters who are on their way to the bigger races of the autumn carnival such as the Gr1 Lightning Stakes (1000m WFA) one week later at Flemington or the Gr1 William Reid Stakes (1200m WFA) in 3 weeks time at Moonee Valley.

Some quality gallopers have won the Australia Stakes race over the years including Black Caviar (2010), El Segundo (2007), Hareeba (1995), Schillaci (1993), Redelva (1990) and flying mare Special in 1988. The Gr3 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) on CF Orr Stakes day may also be on the agenda for horses contesting this event.

Black Caviar (2010) won the race first-up from a spell and in recent times the Australia Stakes has been taken out by Lucky Secret (2009), Let Go Thommo (2008) and El Segundo (2007).

2010 Australia Stakes: Black Caviar proved too good under lights at the Valley when she sat outside leader Here De Angels before running to the lead rounding the turn and kicked away for a very impressive win. Here De Angels fought on well to hold second place, but was no match for the winner, while La Rocket ran into third placing.
