The Carlyon Cup is a Group 3 set weight & penalty race for open horses that takes place each February at Caulfield racecourse during the the Melbourne autumn racing carnival The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and is worth $125,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Carlyon Cup was taken out by Lord Pyrus from Voile Rouge with Its Prince third.
The Carlyon Cup is held on the Melbourne Racing Club's second biggest race day of the autumn, Gr1 CF Orr Stakes day at Caulfield.
The Carlyon Cup is a more than handy race that generally attracts above average horses and has been won by some nice types over the years, including Apache Cat (2007), Northerly (2001), Veeandercross (1993) and the great miler Super Impose (1989).
Run under set weight plus penalty conditions, the race tends to favour the better performed gallopers involved and horses tackling this race may continue on to a race like the Gr2 Blamey Stakes at Flemington on Super Saturday of Racing in March, run under similar conditions.
Lord Pyrus (2011) won an RB89 handicap race over 1410m at Flemington prior to his success in this event and recent Carlyon Cup winners have been Rightfully Yours (2010) and Time Matters (2009).
