Northerly Stakes

The Northerly Stakes is a Group 3 handicap race held annually each October at Ascot racecourse in Perth, Western Australia during the Perth summer racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1400 metres and worth $125,000 in prize money. The 2019 Northerly Stakes was won by The Velvet King from Achernar Star with Great Shot third.

After an upgrade from Listed to Group 3 status for the 2013/2014 racing season the Northerly Stakes is now the first group race of the new season in Perth and paves the way for a number of feature races each week until the running of the Group 1 Railway Stakes & Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes in late November.

The Northerly Stakes is a handicap event for three-year-olds & upwards that typically attracts fit, in form local types or resuming autumn stars and has been won by some more than handy types over the years including Ranger (2011), Megatic (2008-09) and Summer Beau (1994).

Taking place on the same day as the Caulfield Cup in Melbourne, this race generally suits those horses down in the weights who are on the improve and the Northerly Stakes provides a good lead up to races such as the Gr3 Asian Beau Stakes & Gr3 RJ Peters Stakes at the same track in November.

Galaxy Star (2nd in 2018), Balmont Girl (3rd in 2014) and Platinum Rocker (3rd in 2013) all went on to win the Asian Beau Stakes after placing in the Northerly Stakes. Bunbury galloper Maschino (3rd in 2012) finished runner-up in the Asian Beau Stakes at his next outing before taking out the RJ Peters Stakes at his following start.

The Listed Birthday Stakes has been a sound recent guide to this race with both Black Heart Bart (2015) and Lite'n In My Veins (2016) taking out the Birthday Stakes & Northerly Stakes double.

The upcoming Gr2 Lee Steere Stakes in November may also be on the agenda for Northerly Stakes entrants. Silverstream (2017) and Black Heart Bart (2015) are the most recent gallopers to win the Northerly Stakes & Lee Steere Stakes double.

The Velvet King (2019) ran second to Cup Night in an RTG 78+ race over 1400m at Ascot before scoring a stylish victory in this event for the Darren Mcauliffe stable.
