The Ranvet Stakes is the first weight-for-age event of the Sydney autumn racing carnival over 2000 metres. It tends to attract good quality middle distance types who may head on to a race like the Group 1 Tancred Stakeslaters in the carnival at the same track.
This race has proven a great guide to the Tancred Stakes in recent years. Silent Achiever (2014), Manighar (2012), Tuesday Joy (2008) & Eremein (2006) all captured the Ranvet Stakes & Tancred Stakes double, while Thesio (2009) finished runner-up in the Tancred Stakes at his next outing. More recently, Fiveandahalfstar (2nd in 2013) finished runner-up in this event before winning the Tancred Stakes at his next start.
The Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes can often throw up winners or placegetters in this race and Contributer (2015) Thesio (2010), Grand Armee (2005) and Tie The Knot (2000-01) hav e all won the Chipping Norton Stakes & Ranvet Stakes double in recent times, while a number of horses have ran placings in both races.
Some classy gallopers have won the Ranvet Stakes over the years including the likes of Theseo (20010-11), Grand Armee (2005), Tie The Knot (2000-01), Veandercross (1993), Super Impose (1991) and the outstanding galloper Better Loosen Up (1990).
Avilius (2019) finished fifth in the Group 1 Australian Cup over 2000m at Flemington in Melbourne before heading to Sydney to score a slashing victory in this event for the james Cummings stable.
Recent Ranvet Stakes winners include Gailo Chop (2018) and Our Ivanhowe (2017).
