The PJ O'Shea Stakes is a Group 2 weight-for-age race held annually in late May or early June at Eagle Farm racecourse in Brisbane, Queensland. The race is run over a distance of 2200 metres and worth $250,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 PJ O'Shea Stakes was won by Glass Harmonium from Shoot Out with Scenic Shot third.
The PJ O'Shea Stakes is a weight-for-age distance race over 2200m that suits the classier types entered due to the level weights conditions of the event. The race often attracts a quality galloper and has been won by some very good horses over the years, including Yippio (2001), Intergaze (1998), The Phantom Chance (1996) and Rough Habit in 1995.
Horses from this race may go on to the Gr2 Brisbane Cup over 2400m the following week at the same track or the Gr3 Tattersall's Cup over 2200m on Gr1 Winter Stakes day on the final day of the carnival at Eagle Farm. Scenic Shot (2009) was the last galloper to take out the PJ O'Shea Stakes and Brisbane Cup double.
The Gr1 Doomben Cup has been a good guide to this race in recent times with Scenic Shot (2009) winning the Doomben Cup & PJ O'Shea Stakes double, while Rampant Lion (2nd 2008) & Gaze (2nd 2007) placed in both events. Glass Harmonium (2011), Triple Honour (2010), Natural Blitz (2005) and Pentastic (2004) both placed in the Doomben Cup before winning this race.
Glass Harmonium (2011) ran third in the Doomben Cup on his way to victory in this event and recent PJ O'Shea Stakes winners include Triple Honour (2010) and Scenic Shot (2008-2009).
