The BTC Cup is a Group 1 weight-for-age race held each May at Doomben racecourse in Brisbane, Queensland. The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres and worth $400,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 BTC Cup was won by Black Caviar from Hay List with Buffering third.
The BTC Cup is the first major race of the Brisbane winter racing carnival at weight-for-age and generally assembles a field of well above average gallopers. Top class horses to win the BTC Cup over the years include Black Caviar (2011), Apache Cat (2008), Falvelon (2000 & 2003), General Nediym (1998) and Chief De Beers (1996).
The BTC Cup is the ideal lead up event to one of the bigger races of the Brisbane winter which is the Gr1 Doomben 10,000 over 1350 metres in a fortnight at Doomben and the last horse to take out the BTC Cup & Doomben 10,000 double was Apache Cat (2008), who also won the Doomben 10,000 the following year after running third in this race beforehand.
In recent times Takeover Target (2nd in 2007) managed to win the Doomben 10,000 at his next start, while smart mare Melito (2nd in 2010) went on to run third in the Doomben 10,000 behind Hot Danish at her next start.
Black Caviar (2011) won the Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes over 1200m at Randwick on her way to winning this event on her Brisbane debut and recent BTC Cup winners have been Albert The Fat (2010) and Duporth (2009).
