The Doomben 10000 is a Group 1 weight-for-age race held each May at Doomben racecourse in Brisbane, Queensland. The race is run over a distance of 1350 metres and worth $650,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Doomben 10000 was won by Beaded from Love Conquers All with Black Piranha third.
Held on the final and major race day of the Doomben racing carnival, Doomben 10,000 day also features the Gr3 Premier's Cup and Gr3 Grand Prix Stakes.
The Doomben 10000 is the premier sprint event of the winter carnival at Doomben and always attracts a good class field. The race is typically taken out by a more than handy galloper and the weight-for-age conditions of the race lends itself to the better performed horses entered.
The Gr1 BTC Cup held two weeks earlier at the same track has been a good guide in recent years, with Apache Cat (2008) taking out the BTC Cup & Doomben 10000 double in the same year, and in 2009 he finished second in the BTC Cup before scoring in this event for the second year in a row. Takeover Target (2007) finished second in the BTC Cup before winning this race at his next start.
The honour roll for this event sees many of Australia's best sprinters name etched upon it, with horses such as Apache Cat (2008-09), Takeover Target (2007), Bel Esprit (2003), Falvelon (2001-02) and Chief De Beers twice in 1995 & 1998, being winners of this race.
Many horses from this race will go on and tackle the major sprint race of the Brisbane winter carnival which is the Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap in a fortnight at Eagle Farm. Black Piranha (2nd in 2009) went on to win the Stradbroke next start after placing in this race.
Melito (3rd in 2010) ran placings in both the BTC Cup & Doomben 10000 and then went on to run second in the Stradbroke Handicap at her next start before winning the premier mares race of the winter carnival, the Gr1 Winter Stakes, on the last day of the carnival at Eagle Farm.
Beaded (2011) ran second in the Gr1 Robert Sangster Stakes at Morphettville in Adelaide before tasting success in this event and recent Doomben 10000 winners include Hot Danish (2010) and Apache Cat in successive years (2008-09).
