The Thousand Guineas is a Group 1 set weights race for three-year-old fillies that takes place annually at Caulfield racecourse during the Melbourne spring racing carnival in October. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and worth $500,000 in prizemoney. The 2009 Thousand Guineas was won by the David Haye's trained Irish Lights from Melito with Faint Perfume third.
Thousand Guineas day is now a midweek meeting held on a Wednesday after the Caulfield Guineas on the previous Saturday, and before the Caulfield Cup the following Saturday. The Thousand Guineas used to be held on Caulfield Cup Day, but in 1988 the race was moved to the middle day of the Caulfield Cup Carnival.

The Thousand Guineas is the Melbourne Racing Club's premier event for three-year-old fillies and winners and placegetters generally take the path to the Wakeful Stakes on Derby Day and then the Crown Oaks on the third day of the Flemington carnival in November.
If a top quality filly stands out from the rest then she will most likely dominate this race and also the Gr2 Wakeful Stakes and Gr1 Crown Oaks. The race is the female equivalent of the Caulfield Guineas for colts and geldings and is run over the same distance of 1600 metres.
The best guide to the Thousand Guineas over the years has been the Gr2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) which takes place just under a couple of weeks earlier at Flemington on Turnbull Stakes day.
Gallica (2008), Alinghi (2004) and Special Harmony (2003) all won the Manifold/Guineas double, while Serious Speed (2007) and Miss Finland (2006) both placed in the Edward Manifold before winning this event. The set weight conditions of the race ensures the best filly will win more often than they lose.
Irish Lights (2009) won the Gr3 Thousand Guineas Prelude prior to scoring in this event and recent winners have been Gallica (2008), Serious Speed (2007) and Miss Finland in 2006.

The Thousand Guineas has provided six Crown Oaks winners in recent times with Miss Finland (2006), Special Harmony (2003), Magical Miss (2001), Northwood Plume (1994), Arborea (1993) and Richfield Lady (1991) all successful.
Faint Perfume (3rd in 2009) had a wonderful Flemington carnival in November winning the Wakeful Stakes on her way to winning the premier race for 3yo fillies, the Crown Oaks. Melito (2nd in 2009) finished runner-up to Faint Perfume in the Wakeful Stakes.

2009 Thousand Guineas: Irish Lights raced on the pace all the way and then raced to the front in the straight to open up a winning lead and then held on well to score in strong fashion. Melito ran on well late in the race to gain second placing, while Faint perfume also finished well for third.
