Edward Manifold Stakes

The Edward Manifold Stakes is a Group 2 race for three-year-old fillies only and takes place under set weight conditions each year at Flemington racecourse during the Melbourne spring racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and worth $250,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Edward Manifold Stakes was won by Mosheen from Bliss Street with Celebrity Girl third.

Taking place on the same day as the Gr1 Turnbull Stakes, the Edward Manifold Stakes signals the start of quality group racing ahead for fillies.

The Edward Manifold Stakes is held at the spacious Flemington race track and generally sees the better performed fillies of the spring contest this race on their way to the Gr1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield in around ten days time.

In recent times Gallica (2008), Alinghi (2004), Special Harmony (2003), Inaflury (1998), Azzurro (1992), Richfield Lady (1991) and Riverina Charm (1988) have completed the Edward Manifold & Thousand Guineas double.

The race has been won by some top class three-year-olds such as Alinghi (2004) and Special Harmony (2003), but most times the winner is simply an above average filly who follows the familiar 3yo filly path to the Thousand Guineas, Wakeful Stakes and Crown Oaks.

Mosheen (2011) ran third in the Gr3 Thousand Guineas Prelude over 1400m at Caulfield prior to winning this event recent Edward Manifold Stakes winners have been Brazilian Pulse (2010) and Majestic Music (2009).

Spring Guide
Mosheen (2011) went on to win the Crown Oaks at Flemington after winning this event, while Brazilian Pulse (2010) ran third in the Thousand Guineas at Caufield before taking out the Wakeful Stakes and Crown Oaks double at Flemington during the four-day VRC carnival.

Majestic Music (2009) finished runner-up in the Gr 2 Sandown Guineas at Sandown while Fomalite (2nd in 2009) ran second in the Wakeful Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day.

Gallica (2008) went on to win the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield, as did Serious Speed (2nd in 2007) who also finished a top second in the Crown Oaks at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup carnival.

Miss Finland (2nd in 2006) had a successful spring of 2007 with a win in the Memsie Stakes and 2nds in the Underwood Stakes and Yalumba Stakes.
