The Sapphire Stakes is a Group 2 race for fillies & mares that takes place each April at Randwick racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres under set weight & penalty conditions and worth $150,000 in prizemoney. The 2010 Sapphire Stakes was won by Renaissance from Beaded with Jersey Lily third.
The race was run as the 'Lady Sonia McMahon Memorial Stakes' in 2010 in honour of the late Lady Sonia McMahon who died in early April, 2010.

The Sapphire Stakes is a race for fillies & mares only that will attract more than handy types who may come via the Gr3 Birthday Card Stakes held on Rosehill Guineas Day. Court (2009) ran third in the Birthday Card Stakes prior to winning this race, while Renaissance (2010) finished sixth in the Birthday Card Stakes before her last bound win.
Females that previously contested stronger mares races like the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Classic or Gr1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes may also consider tackling this event.
The race takes place on the same day as the Gr1 AJC Australian Derby and recent winners of the Sapphire Stakes have been Court (2009) and Belong To Many (2008).

2010 Sapphire Stakes: Renaissance was worse than midfield turning from home and came with a well timed run down the middle of the track to get up in the last stride and nudge out stablemate Beaded on the line. Beaded raced on the pace and ran to the lead inside the 200m before being collared late, while Jersey Lily enjoyed a good run on the pace and battled on fairly for third.
