The Birthday Card Stakes is a fillies & mares quality handicap that attracts handy types suited to the handicap conditions of the race. The better mares in the race will be carrying high weights which makes the task of winning much tougher than if it were raced at level weights. Improving fillies & mares that can get into the race on the limit or can beat the handicapper will be attractive betting propositions.
Occasionally a top class filly or mare might tackle this event, but it is typically not a race for the elite females and generally winners and placegetters will simply be above average types who may continue to a race like the Gr2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) on Derby day at Randwick.

2010 Birthday Card Stakes: Patronyme sat on the pace behind leader (Mary's Grace) and made her move in the straight when she raced to the lead and kicked clear inside the 200m mark and go on for a solid win. Beaded was always well back worse than midfield and made plenty of ground in the straight to grab second, while Melito was also worse than midfield and made her run with Beaded and ran into third placing.
