CB Cox Stakes
The CB Cox Stakes is a Group 2 weight-for-age race held annually each December at Ascot racecourse in Perth, Western Australia during the Perth summer racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 2100 metres and worth $250,000 in prize money. The 2019 CB Cox Stakes was won by Regal Power from Gatting with Star Exhibit third.
The race was run over 2400 metres up until 2008, before Perth Racing reduced the race distance to its current 2100m trip to coincide with the Perth Cup, which was also reduced from 3200m to 2400m, thus making the Cox Stakes a good lead up event for the Cup.
This event has been run as the 'Ted Van Heemst Stakes' since 2016, in honour of former Perth Racing Chairman, Ted van Heemst.

The CB Cox Stakes is the first weight-for-age race beyond 2000m for the summer and it's a level weights event over 2100m that has proven a great guide to the Perth Cup on New Year's Day in recent times. Horses that previously tackled the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic may also consider running in this event. Pounamu (2017) and Ihtsahymn (2013) are the most recent CB Cox Stakes & Kington Town Classic double winners.
This race has been a great guide to finding the winners and placegetters of the Perth Cup over the years. Delicacy (2015), Lords Ransom (2009), Cats Fun (2007), Palatious (1993), Mirror Magic (1991) and Saratov (1988) all went on to win the Perth Cup after winning this race. Early Express (2005), Free At Last (2004) and Ideal Centreman (1990) all managed placings in the Perth Cup.
Multiple horses have either won or placed in both races in recent years and Delicacy (2015) was the last galloper to claim the CB Cox Stakes & Perth Cup double. There's a fair chance the eventual winner of the Cup, or perhaps a placegetter, may be going around in this race. Star Exhibit (5th in 2018) and Talent Show (4th in 2012) won the Perth Cup after running fifth and fourth respectively in this race, while Red Blast (2nd in 2014) finished runner-up in both races.
Regal Power (2019) ran sixth in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic over 1800m at Ascot before scoring a comfortable victory in this event for the Grant & Alana Williams stable.
Recent CB Cox Stakes winners include Galaxy Star (2018) and Pounamu (2017).
