The WATC Derby is a Group 1 classic event for three-year-olds held each April at
Ascot racecourse in Perth, Western Australia during the autumn racing carnival. The race is run over the traditonal derby distance of 2400 metres and offers $500,000 in prizemoney. The 2010 WATC Derby was won by Chartreux from Bridgestone with Brother Mak third.

The WATC Derby is the premier staying event for three-year-olds held in Western Australia each year and typically gathers together the best local 3yo talent and any interested three-year-olds from other states.
The race takes place during the Perth autumn carnival at Ascot and the winner is more often than not just a handy galloper rather than a topliner, as most of the best three-year-olds around the country will be in Sydney during the autumn, for the prestigious AJC Australian Derby and AJC Australian Oaks.
More often than not the winner of the WATC Derby will just be an above average local type or a more than handy interstate raider, who may go on to be competitive in better quality races, without rising to any great heights.
In recent times the WATC Derby has proven a handy guide to the Gr2 Perth Cup with Guyno (2007) and Cats Fun (2006) both going on to win the Perth Cup after winning the Derby as a three-year-old. Guyno won the Perth Cup in 2009 and Cats Fun was successful in 2008.
Chartreux (2010) won a 2500m race at Flemington prior to travelling to Perth to win this event and recent winners of the WATC Derby have been Markus Maximus (2009) and Grand Journey (2008).

2010 WATC Derby: Victorian galloper came with a well timed run to get to the lead inside the final 100m and was too strong in the run to the line. Bridgestone made a race of it with the winner in the final stanza and was a gallant runner-up, while Brother Mak wasn't far away in third sport after running on fairly.
