Summer Cup

The Summer Cup is a Group 3 open handicap that takes place each year on Boxing Day at Randwick racecourse in Sydney over the summer period. The race is run over a distance of 2400 metres and worth $125,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Summer Cup was won by Yulalona from Nextanix with Count Encosta third.

Held the weekend after the Gr2 Villiers Stakes over 1600m at Randwick, these two races are the predominant group events that take place in December and the Summer Cup is the final group race in Sydney for the year.

Traditionally held at Randwick, the 2011 Summer Cup was held at Rosehill racecourse due to the partial closure of Royal Randwick for construction works.

The Summer Cup is a stayers event run the day after Christmas Day and is the main distance race held during the summer in Sydney. The race generally tends to attract a handy field of predominantly local stayers who are not typically anything special, although it's worth noting that the great miler Super Impose managed to win this event in 1988.

Horses who contested the Villiers Stakes the week before may consider going on to tackle this race and Aqua D'Amore (2005) was the last galloper to score the Villiers Stakes & Summer Cup double in the same year.

Yulalona (2011) finished sixth in the listed Christmas Cup over 2400m at Rosehill prior to winning this event and recent Summer Cup winners include Spechenka (2010) and Solid Billing (2009).
