The George Moore Stakes (formerly known as the Summer Stakes) is a Group 3 quality handicap race held annually at Doomben racecourse in Brisbane in December. The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres and worth $200,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 George Moore Stakes was won by Adebisi from Latin News with Spirit Of Boom third.
Formerly known as the Summer Stakes, the George Moore Stakes is the first of three group races held in brisbane during December, with the other two being the Gr3 Vo Rogue Plate and the Gr3 BJ McLachlan Stakes.
The George Moore Stakes is a handy sprint race for this time of year and typically attracts the best available local sprinters going around at the time due to the high prizemoney on offer and the handicap conditions of the event.
The race has been won by some good horses at various times, including quality types such as Takeover Target (2005) and Chief De Beers (1994 & 1997), and is held during the Brisbane summer carnival which hosts a number of listed stakes races throughout the months of December and January.
Adebisi (2011) won a BM90 race over 1100m at Doomben prior to winning this race second-up from a spell and recent George Moore Stakes winners include Burdekin Blues (2009) and Friendly Embrace (2008). The race was not held in 2010 due to inclement weather.
