The Canonbury Stakes is a Group 3 race for two-year-old colts & geldings held in late January at Rosehill racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales during the Sydney autumn racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1100 metres under set weight conditions and worth $150,000 in prizemoney. The 2018 Canonbury Stakes was won by Performer from Stratosphere with Exceltic third.
Taking place on the same day as the Gr2 Expressway Stakes, the Canonbury Stakes was upgraded from listed to Group 3 status for the 2014/2015 racing season.
|Date:||Saturday 2nd February 2019|
|Track:||Rosehill racecourse, Melbourne|
|Race Type:||3yo C&G - Set Weights + Penalty|
The Canonbury Stakes is the first group race of the Sydney autumn for 2yo colts & geldings only and is the male equivalent of the Gr3 Widden Stakes for fillies which takes place on the same day.
Those classier gallopers engaged will likely follow the traditional two-year-old path via the Gr2 Reisling Stakes or Gr2 Todman Stakes on their way to the $1,000,000 Gr1 Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill in March. Vancouver (2015) was the last two-year-old to win the Canonbury Stakes & Golden Slipper Stakes double.
Performer (2018) resumed from a spring spell to win this event in narrow style for the Chris Waller stable and recent Canonbury Stakes winners include Pariah (2017) and Tessera (2016).
