The Coongy Handicap is a Group 3 open handicap race held at Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria each October. It's run over a distance of 2000 metres and worth $200,000 in prize money. The 2019 Coongy Handicap was won by Wolfe from Top Of The Range with Kiwia third.
In 2019 the Melbourne Racing Club moved the Coongy Handicap from Caulfield Cup day on the final Saturday of the Caulfield three-day spring racing carnival, to Wednesday midweek on the second day, which is Blue Sapphire Stakes day.

The Coongy Handicap is a middle distance race for open horses and attracts handy milers and those horses looking to step up in distance towards the longer races to come during the spring carnival.
This event provides a handy lead-up race for horses who may be contesting the Caulfield Cup. In recent times it has also proven a reasonable guide to upcoming distance races such as the Gr2 Moonee Valley Cup at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day and the Gr2 Hotham Handicap at Flemington on Derby Day.
Wolfe (2019) ran third in the Group 3 The Bart Cummings over 2520m at Flemington before pulling out all stops to tin this event for the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott stable.
Recent Coongy Handicap winners include Mask Of Time (2018) and Kiwia (2017).
This race has not been a great guide to any upcoming big race winners and the most recent winner to do anything of note was Ginga Dude (2010) who went on to run third in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day. Top Of The Range (2nd in 2019) and Dream Pedlar (4th in 2010) managed to win the Group 3 Bendigo Cup later in the month at Epsom racecourse in Bendigo.
Shocking (2009) scored a big win in the the Hotham Handicap on Derby day before winning the Melbourne Cup the following Tuesday and Baughurst (2008-09) went on to run placings in both the 2008 Moonee Valley Cup and 2008 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
Fire in the Night (2007) ran 3rd in the listed HKJC Plate on Melbourne Cup day of the same year, while Maybe Better (2006) went on to win the Hotham Handicap on Derby day before running 3rd in that years Melbourne Cup.
