The Carbine Club Stakes is a mile event for three-year-old gallopers that can herald the onset of a topliner such as Saintly (1995), who announced himself to the racing world with a spectacular victory, but more often than not it simply attracts handy types who may go on to races like the Gr2 Sandown Guineas later in the spring. Mahuta (2015) was the last three-year-old to win the Carbine Club Stakes & Sandown Guineas double.
Three-year-olds who are strong at the end of 1400m or have performed well over 1600m are suited to this event. The Carbine Club Stakes usually kicks off proceedings on Derby Day to set the Melbourne Cup four-day carnival into action.
Comin' Through (2016) finished runner-up in a BM70 race over 1400m at Randwick before winning this event and recent Carbine Club Stakes winners include Mahuta (2015) and Kermadec (2014).
Winners of this race may go on to taste success in the Gr2 Sandown Guineas as Mahuta (2015), Paxmadia (2013), Kidnapped (2009), Over (1999), Voting (1993) and Shankhill Lass (1995) all managed to achieve in recent times. Morton's Fork (2nd in 2016), managed to win the Sandown Guineas at his next start, while Kidnapped (2009) took out the Gr1 SA Derby the following autumn in Adelaide.
Equator (3rd in 2013) finished runner-up to Paxmadia in the Sandown Guineas, while Lunar Rise (2012) and Galah (2011) finished second & third respectively in the Sandown Guineas after winning this race.
Schilling (2nd in 2007) went on to win the Sandown Guineas, while Caymans (4th 2008) also won the Sandown Guineas with Lucky Thunder (2nd 2008) running third in the same race.
