Belmont Sprint
The Belmont Sprint is a Group 3 weight-for-age race held each year in late May or early June at Belmont racecourse in Perth, Western Australia. The race is run over a distance of 1400 metres and worth $125,000 in prize money. The 2020 Belmont Sprint was won by Perfect Jewel from The Velvet King with Angelic Ruler third.
Held during the Perth winter racing carnival, which typically takes place around May, June and July in Perth, the Belmont Sprint is one of four group races during the period.

The Belmont Sprint usually attracts those horses who may have previously contested the Gr3 Roma Cup at the same track earlier in the carnival. The Roma Cup is run under the same WFA conditions, but steps up to 1400m, providing a natural progression in distance for stronger sprinters.
In recent times Elite Belle (2014), Luckygray (2012), Grand Nirvana (2011), Modem (2004) and Tribula (2003) have all won the Roma Cup & Belmont Sprint double, while multiple horses have run placings in both races, or placed in the Roma Cup and gone on to win this race, or vice versa.
Usually the best available local sprinters will contest the Belmont Stakes and the weight-for-age playing field gives the better types a decided advantage over their rivals.
The upcoming Gr3 Hyperion Stakes is the natural progression for competitors in this race and Justin Warwick trained Material Man (2018) is the last galloper to snare the Belmont Sprint & Hyperion Sprint double. Material Man also went on to win the Gr3 Strickland Stakes later in the carnival. Prior to that, Wink And A Nod (2016) managed to win both races, while Fuchsia Bandana (3rd in 2015) went on to win the Hyperion Stakes & Strickland Stakes after running third in the Belmont Sprint.
Galaxy Star (2019) ran second in the Roma Cup over 1400m at Belmont Sprint before scoring a classy victiry in this event for the Grant & Alana Williams stable.
Recent Belmont Sprint winners include Material Man (2018) and Rock Magic (2017).
