The Adelaide Cup is the premier distance race of the South Australian autumn racing carnival in Adelaide, although it's an average quality affair for this time of year. Local stayers and any interstate horses suited by the handicap conditions assemble for this event.
Unfortunately, despite being over 3200 metres, it hasn't proven a great guide to the Melbourne Cup in recent years. Grand grey Subzero (1992) is the last horse to win the Adelaide Cup & Melbourne Cup double.
Of late, the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes has proven the best guide to Adelaide Cup aspirants. Any gallopers who place or finish on the heels of the placegetters tend to run well in the Adelaide Cup.
Both Capecover (2010) and Lacey Underall (2008) ran solid races in the Lord Reims Stakes on their way to success in this race.
Surprise Baby (2019) ran fourth in a BM84 race over 2000m at Flemington in Melbourne before trekking to Adelaide to win this event in comfortable style for Horsham trainer Paul Preusker.
