The WJ Healy Stakes takes place on the final day of the winter carnival and is a sprint event over 1200m run under quality handicap conditions. The race suits improving types who may have got under the handicapper's guard and it tends to assemble handy local gallopers rather than the upper echelon, although occasionally a quality type may take its place in the field.
Held on Group 1 Winter Stakes day, the WJ Healy Stakes can quite often unearth a more than handy sprinter but generally the race will assemble predominantly local sprinters along with the odd talented visitor from interstate and the Gr2 QTC Cup is a typical lead up race to this event.
Hay List (2010) ran second in the June Stakes at Raondwick over 1100m before blitzing the field in this race and recent winners of the Healy Stakes include News Alert (2009) and Nuclear Medicine (2008).

2010 WJ Healy Stakes: Hay List flew to the lead from his wide gate and led comfortably until straightening where he simply blew them away at the 250m mark to go on and score an exciting win by a big margin. Pinwheel raced handy on the pace and got home nicely for a solid second place while Ego's Dare ran on well for third.
