The race itself takes place on one of Doomben's biggest days of racing during the Brisbane winter carnival, Doomben 10000 day.

The Premier's Cup is a handicap distance event over 2200m that is a good lead up race to the Gr2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) in two weeks time. The race will generally attract gallopers who previously competed in the Gr3 Chairman's Handicap (2020m) a fortnight earlier and the field tends to be made up of predominantly handy local stayers.
Fulmonti (3rd in 2008) and Mandela (3rd in 2007) both went on to win this race after running third in the Chairman's Handicap previously, while Fulmonti managed to continue on and finish runner-up in the 2008 Brisbane Cup.
Tabulate (2010) finished unplaced in the Chairman's Handicap prior to winning this race and recent Pemier's Cup winners have been Reggie (2009) and Rezone (2008).

2010 Premier's Cup: Tabulate came with a late run along the inside rail and got the nod in a close photo finish from Albertinelli who looked the winner close to home until collared on the line, while Larry's Never Late had every chance and battled on gamely to hold on to third.
