The Lord Mayors Cup is a 1615m race held under weight-for-age conditions that is typically contested by predominantly local gallopers. The race is usually not an overly high class affair and more often than not is simply an event for handy types, although 1999 Caulfield Cup winner Sky Heights managed to win this race in 2001.
Taking place on Gr1 Doomben Cup day, competitors from this race may head on to a race like the Gr2 PJ O'Shea Stakes at Eagle Farm on Oaks Day.
Rothesay (2010) ran second in a Rosehill 1400m handicap before making the trip to Brisbane to take out this event and then went on to win the Gr2 Queensland Guineas. at his next start.

2010 Lord Mayors Cup: Rothesay was always wide but it made no difference as he produced a big finish in the straight to score a very impressive victory. Our Lukas was alwaus handy in the run and ran to the line solidly for second, while Haddaf raced behind the pace and plugged away for third place without ever threatening.
