Gunsynd Classic Preview

The Gunsynd Classic is a Group 3 race for three-year-olds held annually each year in late April or early May at Eagle Farm racecourse in Brisbane, Queensland during the winter racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and is worth $125,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Gunsynd Classic was was won by Chateau Fort from Equissential with Igles Star third.

The race was formerly known as the 'Doomben Classic', but in 2009, the newly formed Brisbane Racing Club changed the race name from the Doomben Classic to the Gunsynd Classic and the race was also moved to the same day as the Group 2 Sir Byrne Hart Stakes.

The Gunsynd Classic is a set weights race for three-year-olds that typically attracts the better local gallopers going around. The race itself suits the better performed 3yo horses entered for the event due to the level weights playing field.

Three-year-olds contesting this event may go on to tackle the Gr3 Rough Habit Plate over 2020m at Doomben and Fillydelphia finished unplaced in this race before going on to win the Rough Habit Plate at her next start. In recent years Belmonte (2006), Bob's Boy (2003) and Marble Halls (1997) have all managed to take out the Gunsynd Classic & Rough Habit Plate double.

Chateau Fort (2011) won a BM60 event over 1600m at Scone in New South Wales prior to winning this event and recent Gunsynd Classic winners have been Sanderson (2010) and Za Magic (2009).
