Grand Prix Stakes

The Grand Prix Stakes is a Group 3 race for three-year-olds that takes place late May or early June at Eagle Farm racecourse in Brisbane, Queensland. The race is run over a distance of 2200 metres under set weight conditions and worth $150,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Grand Prix Stakes was won by Turnitup from Mr Light Blue with Alma's Fury third.

Held on Doomben 10000 day, which is the premier race day of the Doomben winter carnival in Brisbane, the Grand Prix Stakes is run alongside the Gr1 Doomben 10000 and Gr3 Premiers Cup.

The Grand Prix Stakes was first run in 1974 and is the ideal lead up race for three-year-olds who plan to contest the Queensland Derby over 2400m later in the carnival at Eagle Farm racecourse. The set weight & penalty conditions of the race favours the better horses entered for the event.

Ice Chariot (2006) & Half Hennessy (2003) were the most recent three-year-olds to take out the Grand Prix Stakes & Queensland Derby double and the race generally attracts handy gallopers rather then the elite. Kutchinsky (2010) went on to finish runner-up in the Qld Derby at his next start behind Darian.

Turnitup (2011) won a 3yo handicap over 2000m at Flemington prior to travelling north to Queensland to win this event and recent Grand Prix Stakes winners include Kutchinsky (2010) and Saint Minerva (2009).
