Horse racing at Victoria Park racecourse ceased in early 2008 Following the rejection of a proposal to upgrade horse and motor racing facilities, and the the SAJC vacated the premises.

In August 2008, the Adelaide City Council announced plans to turn Victoria Park into a "people's park", incorporating wetlands, community sporting facilities, walking tracks and temporary motor racing facilities.

All city racing in Adelaide now takes place at Morphettville racecourse.

A second turf track at Allan Scott Park Morphettville was completed for racing, with the first meeting held on Wednesday June 17th, 2009 and known as ‘The Parks’. The new turf track will enable the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) to hold up to 70 race meetings a year.

The track circumference of "The Parks" is 2100m with a track width of 25m, while the home straight is 320m in length. Flat races will be run over distances from 1000m to 2400m, while hurdles and steeple races will be run over 3000m and 3350m respectively. With the closing of Victoria Park and Cheltenham Park as race venues, "The Parks" has incorporated a 1400m chute that allows the running of group and listed races previously held at those now defunct tracks.

South Australian Jockey Club
The South Australian Jockey Club is the main race club for metropolitan racing in Adelaide and dates back to 1856. The SAJC and was also responsible for building the existing heritage listed grandstand at Victoria Park in 1880. The SAJC looks after racing at all Adelaide's three city tracks, including Morphettville and Victoria Park.

In March 2008 it was announced that the SAJC had decided to leave Victoria Park when their bid for a $55 million multi-purpose grandstand was rejected by Adelaide City Council, and a $1.5 million debt would incur if regular meetings continued at Victoria Park. The club envisaged it would need to spend about $20 million upgrading facilities and the board unanimously recommended they consolidate at home track Morphettville, where a second grass track will be installed to cope with the increase in meetings. Victoria Park is likely to now become a community area.

Racing Carnivals
Victoria Park does not have a racing carnival and does not host any major races.
