Canterbury race track is situated about 15 minutes south-west of Sydney's city centre and is the predominant midweek racing venue in Sydney and home of night racing which has a fully enclosed air-conditioned betting area.
Night meetings at Canterbury generally take place on Thursday or Friday nights in Sydney and one of the better races held there through the year is the listed Canterbury Classic over 1100m in January. It is home to the Australian Turf Club.
The Sydney Turf Club (STC) was founded in 1943 and is the youngest of Australia's Principal Race Clubs. It was formed following an Act passed by the New South Wales parliament called the Sydney Turf Club Act. The Act had taken 40 years to draft and gave the club the power to hold 62 race meetings a year at the Rosehill and Canterbury tracks.
The Sydney Turf Club (STC) and the Australian Jockey Club (AJC) officially merged in February 2011 to form a new Sydney racing club, the Australian Turf Club (ATC) and commenced racing on Monday 7th February in New South Wales.
The NSW Government secured a $174million funding package to redevelop Randwick racecourse ($150M) and also make improvements to Rosehill Gardens ($24Million).
Canterbury Racing Carnivals |
Canterbury no longer has a racing carnival as all feature races have been moved across to Rosehill racecourse. The Canterbury track is predominantly used now for midweek and night racing but does host a couple of listed races throughout the season.
