Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival 2010

The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival is undoubtably the highlight of the racing year in Australia and it brings out the very best of Australian and International thoroughbreds for 50 days of world-class horse racing action. The whole event has a carnival like atmosphere which brings the city of Melbourne to life during spring carnival time.

Major carnivals during the spring include the Melbourne Cup carnival at Flemington in early November and the Caulfield Cup carnival at Caulfield in October. Moonee Valley hosts WS Cox Plate day in late October, while Sandown is home to Sandown Classic day one week after the Flemington carnival ends on Emirates Stakes day.

Weight-for-age group racing in August kicks off the new stakes racing season in Melbourne and with the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes taking place on the last day of the racing season on July 31st this year, due to August 1st falling on a Sunday, the JJ Liston Stakes will be the first good group race day of the new season, along with the Cockram Stakes for mares.

Group One racing finally kicks off in mid September with the running of the Underwood Stakes and Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield racecourse. A number of high quality feature races are then held each week, before we get to the important Caulfield and Flemington racing carnivals in late October and early November.

The Caulfield Cup is the second of the big spring cups and it is a tough Group One handicap event over 2400m that takes place around mid October and forms part of big feature spring cups betting double with the Melbourne Cup.

Moonee Valley racecourse is host to the Group One WS Cox Plate over 2040m on in October and it is widely recognised as the weight-for-age championship of Australia.

The jewel in the crown of the spring racing carnival is Australia's most famous race the time honoured Melbourne Cup which is always run on the first Tuesday in November over a distance of 3200m (2 miles) at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne.

The 2009 Melbourne Cup carnival attracted 368,929 people in total to Flemington race track as racing fans gathered together to enjoy spring racing at its best. Derby Day had the biggest crowd with 108,178 people attending, while 102,161 ventured out on Cup Day, with 80,112 on Oaks Day and 78,478 on Emirates day.
