The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres in late November and is a prestigiuous sprint event on the Perth racing calendar. It is worth $400,000 in prizemoney and was won in 2008 by quality galloper Takeover Target from Apache Cat with Marasco third.

The Winterbottom Stakes is the premier sprint event of the Perth summer racing carnival and attracts good horses to make it a high standard race for this time of year. Races such as the Gr2 Lee Steere Stakes(1400m WFA) held 3 week's earlier and the Gr3 Colonel Reeves Stakes(1200m) 2 week's earlier are good lead up races to this event. Horses from this rave may head on to the A.J. Scahill Stakes over 1400m at Weight-for-age in 2 week's time.
Winners in recent times have been Glory Hunter(2007), Marasco(2006), and Miss Andretti in 2005.
